Neerlandia was founded by Dutch immigrants beginning in 1911. The name "Neerlandia" refers to the first settlers' country of origin, the Netherlands. In 1912, a group of Dutch immigrants living in Edmonton established the colony of Neerlandia, near Westlock, the province's only exclusively Dutch settlement. The Post office opened on April 1, 1913. The first Postmaster was Minne Mast, who held the position from 1913 until 1923. The surrounding area is largely agricultural based with many people in the out-lying area also being involved in construction and other trades as well.
