The town was named after the Indian name for the nearly river.
The Post Office opened on November 1, 1931.
The first Postmaster was Mrs. Mildred Carlyle, who held the position from 1931 to 1941.
Originally named Carrot River Station. Name changed on February 24, 1936.
Current population is 1000.
